Baker Hughes, PETRONAS Sign Asia-Pacific Energy Transition MoU
Baker Hughes and Malaysia’s national oil company Petronas have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a strategic partnership aimed at supporting Asia-Pacific's energy expansion and transition toward sustainable energy. The collaboration will focus on enhancing local supply chains, expanding liquefied natural gas services, and implementing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Both companies plan to develop sustainable energy solutions including biofuels and lubricants for turbomachinery and will invest in talent training to strengthen regional field operations. Baker Hughes announced plans to establish a comprehensive aeroderivative gas turbine module repair facility in Malaysia to improve service turnaround times and support the growing installed base of gas turbines in the region. This partnership aligns with Malaysia's recent CCUS legislation aimed at supporting large-scale carbon capture deployment to reduce carbon emissions, although some environmental groups have expressed concerns about offshore CO2 storage safety and fossil fuel reliance. Baker Hughes CEO Lorenzo Simonelli emphasized the importance of regional collaboration to achieve reliable, secure, and lower-carbon energy development.
