Galloway National Park
The Scottish Government has proposed Galloway as the site for Scotland's third national park, with Rural Affairs Secretary Mairi Gougeon announcing the decision after a competitive selection process. A consultation led by NatureScot will assess Galloway's suitability and determine the proposed boundaries, with findings expected by April 2025. The bid for Galloway, supported by local communities and businesses, emphasizes the area's diverse landscapes and cultural heritage, aiming to bring significant economic and environmental benefits. Rob Lucas, chair of the Galloway National Park Association, hailed the proposal, highlighting the community's longstanding efforts over the past seven years. The last national park in Scotland was designated over 20 years ago, and the government aims to establish at least one new park by 2026. Other regions, including Loch Awe and Tay Forest, were also considered but ultimately not selected.
