LAPD Sergeant, Motorist Killed in 405 Crash
LAPD Sergeant Shiou Deng, a 26-year veteran known for his work in the mental evaluation unit, was killed early Monday morning while assisting at the scene of a crash on the southbound 405 Freeway near Brentwood. Deng had stopped with his emergency lights activated to help a motorist from an earlier collision when he was fatally struck by a passing vehicle. The original crash had already resulted in the death of another driver, and a third person was hospitalized in unknown condition. The incident prompted a prolonged closure of all southbound lanes during the morning rush hour. City officials, including LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell and Mayor Karen Bass, honored Deng's legacy of courage and selflessness. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
