Guyana imposes curfew amid protests over 11-year-old's death
Guyana imposed a nationwide overnight curfew following widespread unrest sparked by public outrage over the death of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge, whose body was found in a hotel pool and whose autopsy confirmed drowning. The curfew, initially set from 12:30 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., was considered for extension as authorities responded to looting, fires, and clashes between protesters and police in Georgetown and other areas. Officials, including Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn, toured affected areas and emphasized that the unrest, including arson and robberies, was exacerbated by criminal elements exploiting public frustration. The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry and President Irfaan Ali called for calm and urged citizens to reject violence, stressing public safety and the need for a thorough investigation. Schools, universities, and many businesses in the capital remained closed, and authorities reported using tear gas and rubber bullets during protests, as well as the deaths of two suspected looters. The government has pledged a comprehensive review of the case, with foreign forensic experts involved, and warned against further destruction and violence.
