NHS Plans DNA Screening for All Newborns in England

The UK government plans to sequence the whole genome of every newborn baby within the next decade as part of a £650 million investment in DNA technology aimed at predicting and preventing hundreds of diseases. Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized that this genomic revolution will transform the NHS from a reactive service that treats illness to one that anticipates and prevents disease, offering personalized healthcare to reduce pressure on services and improve health outcomes. Currently, newborns undergo a heel-prick blood test for nine serious conditions, but genome sequencing will vastly expand the ability to detect rare diseases before symptoms appear, allowing for earlier intervention. This plan follows a recent announcement of a £29 billion annual increase in NHS funding over three years, reinforcing the government’s commitment to advancing healthcare through technology and prevention.
