Seven Men Convicted of Greenock Doorstep Murder

Seven men have been convicted of the murder of Neil Canney, a 37-year-old man who was shot on his doorstep in Greenock in February 2023. The group, including Jack Benson, Dale Russell, Martin McCusker, Brendan Balloch, Kieran Hendry, Michael Munro, and Kieran Meechan (who pleaded guilty earlier), were also found guilty of attempted murder following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. The attack occurred around 1:15 a.m. when Canney went to his front door, mistaking one of the assailants for a friend, while his relatives hid inside. Prosecutors noted that it was unclear who fired the fatal shot, but all seven men participated in a coordinated criminal plan to target Canney. Sentencing is scheduled for September 12, 2025. Detective Chief Inspector Graham McCreadie described the attack as shocking and traumatic for the community and emphasized that violent public crimes are rare, pledging continued rigorous investigations to bring offenders to justice.
