Russia sentences Azov fighters to 13-23 years for Mariupol defense
A Russian military court has sentenced 23 members of Ukraine's Azov regiment to lengthy prison terms ranging from 13 to 23 years on charges including terrorist activity and the violent seizure of power. Twelve of the defendants were present in court, while 11 were sentenced in absentia after being returned to Ukraine in prisoner exchanges. The Azov regiment, labeled a terrorist organization by Russia, defended the city of Mariupol during its siege in 2022 and has been a focal point of Russian propaganda. Many defendants reported experiencing torture and inhumane conditions while in custody, with some claiming their testimonies were coerced. The Ukrainian government and supporters view Azov fighters as symbols of national resistance, while Russia continues to characterize them as extremists. The case has drawn international attention, highlighting ongoing tensions surrounding the conflict in Ukraine.
