SNP appoints former MP Callum McCaig as new chief executive after executive resignation
The Scottish National Party (SNP) has appointed Callum McCaig, former MP for Aberdeen South and ex-leader of Aberdeen Council, as its new chief executive following Carol Beattie's immediate resignation due to personal health reasons. McCaig, who also served as a special adviser to SNP First Ministers Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf, aims to lead the party into the 2026 Holyrood election with a focus on securing victory and progressing toward Scottish independence. Beattie, who had been appointed permanently in March 2025 after serving on an interim basis, was credited with streamlining the party's headquarters and ensuring fiscal stability, and she will continue supporting the SNP's campaign despite stepping down. The appointment of McCaig marks the fourth leadership change in the SNP's CEO role since Peter Murrell, Nicola Sturgeson's husband, resigned in March 2023 amid controversy. SNP Business Convener Angela Constance praised McCaig's extensive experience and dedication, emphasizing his role in steering the party through the upcoming election. This leadership transition highlights ongoing internal changes as the SNP prepares for a critical election and continues its campaign for Scottish independence.
