Multiple counties across the United States are reporting significant concerns regarding West Nile Virus (WNV), with several human cases and deaths confirmed this year. Fresno County in California confirmed its first human death of 2024 linked to WNV, amidst 38 cases statewide. Similarly, McHenry County in Illinois reported its first WNV-related death since 2018, and Rock County in Wisconsin confirmed its first human case of the virus this year. Lubbock, Texas also reported its first WNV death of the year, with an increase in symptomatic cases. Health officials are urging residents to take precautions such as using insect repellents, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water to reduce mosquito breeding. The majority of WNV infections are asymptomatic, but severe cases can lead to serious neurological diseases or death, particularly in older adults and immunocompromised individuals.
