India has categorically dismissed claims that the opening of the Dumbur dam in Tripura caused massive flooding in Bangladesh, which affected nearly 1.8 million people and resulted in five deaths. According to India's Ministry of External Affairs, the flooding is due to heavy rainfall in the large catchment areas downstream of the dam, not the release of waters from the dam itself. The Dumbur dam is situated over 120 km upstream from the Bangladesh border and is a low-height structure. Social media in Bangladesh has been rife with accusations against India, partly fueled by rising anti-India sentiments amidst the country's political crisis. India has emphasized the need for bilateral cooperation to manage the shared river systems and mitigate flood impacts on both sides.
