Africa, CARICOM Demand Reparations, Plan 2025 Co-Hosted Event

At the 2nd Africa-CARICOM Summit in Addis Ababa, leaders from Africa and the Caribbean emphasized the urgent need for reparations to address the lasting impacts of colonial abuses and slavery, framing reparations as a matter of justice and dignity rather than charity. Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang of Ghana highlighted reparations as encompassing not only financial compensation but also historical acknowledgment, land recovery, cultural renewal, and policy reforms, while urging progressive nations to support these goals diplomatically and morally. Kenyan President William Ruto stressed that reparations must tackle both historical injustices and ongoing inequalities, calling for a United Nations resolution to place reparatory justice on the global agenda. Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda advocated for reparations to include investments in education, health, technology, and climate resilience, and urged the establishment of a preferential trade agreement to strengthen economic ties between Africa and the Caribbean. The summit underscored the importance of a united transcontinental partnership to transform reparations from symbolic gestures into concrete actions that restore dignity and enable equitable development. Ghana and Togo plan to co-host a significant reparations event alongside the UN General Assembly in September 2025, reflecting the momentum of the ongoing Decade of Reparations.
