Epic Unveils AI Persona Device, Safety for Fortnite

Epic Games is expanding AI integration in Fortnite, introducing the Persona Device in Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) that lets creators build AI-powered NPCs with customizable personalities, voices, and behaviors. This follows controversy over an AI Darth Vader NPC that was manipulated to say offensive language, leading Epic to enhance safety checks and content filters. An AI assistant to help creators write Verse code is also being tested, aiming to make advanced game development more accessible. CEO Tim Sweeney has emphasized that AI is intended to empower, not replace, creators, though concerns about misuse and ethical issues persist. The rollout for these new features is expected later this year. Additionally, Epic will introduce branded assets from major franchises, such as Squid Game and Avatar: The Last Airbender, for UEFN creators.
