2034 Winter Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded the 2030 Winter Olympics to the French Alps and the 2034 Winter Olympics to Salt Lake City, marking the latter's return after its previous hosting in 2002. The French bid, which includes events in ski resorts and arenas in Nice, is contingent on approval from the next French prime minister, with President Emmanuel Macron assuring the IOC of financial backing. Salt Lake City, as the sole contender for 2034, received overwhelming support with 83 out of 89 votes, positioning itself as a prime candidate for a potential permanent rotation of Winter Olympic hosts. The IOC has also amended its host city contract to enforce stricter anti-doping measures amidst ongoing doping controversies in sports. Both cities' selections are influenced by the challenges of climate change and operational costs which have diminished the number of viable host candidates. The 2030 and 2034 Games will utilize existing venues, reflecting a shift towards sustainability in Olympic planning.
