Sasol, Anglo American, De Beers Pilot Renewable Diesel Feedstock in South Africa

Sasol, Anglo American, and De Beers have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to pilot renewable diesel production in South Africa, focusing on feedstock derived from Solaris and Moringa crops. The initiative aims to assess the technical and commercial viability of producing vegetable oil for renewable diesel, which meets conventional diesel standards while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This partnership, unveiled at the African Mining Indaba on February 4, 2025, reflects a strategic shift for Anglo American towards renewable diesel as part of its emissions reduction strategy. With De Beers providing land for cultivation, Sasol plans to leverage its existing infrastructure for more efficient and cost-effective production. Company executives emphasized that renewable diesel can serve as a drop-in fuel for existing equipment, facilitating corporate decarbonization efforts. The project aligns with growing demand for alternative fuels in South Africa's energy transition and sustainability goals.
