Bayesian Superyacht Raised Off Sicily After Fatal 2024 Sinking
The Bayesian superyacht, owned by British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, was successfully raised from the seabed off the coast of Sicily after sinking during a violent storm in August 2024, which caused the loss of seven lives including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. The 56-meter yacht sank rapidly within 16 minutes after being hit by a violent downburst that snapped its mast, although experts believe the vessel should have withstood the weather conditions. The complex and costly $30 million salvage operation, led by TMC Maritime, involved raising the yacht from 50 meters underwater over three days, with the mast to be recovered later. Tragically, the recovery effort was marred by the death of a specialist diver, Robcornelis Maria Huijben Uiben, prompting local superstitions about the yacht being “cursed.” The yacht will be transported to Termini Imerese for further investigation into the sinking, amid speculation that it contained safes with encrypted hard drives linked to Lynch’s past intelligence collaborations. The recovery operation attracted significant attention as the multimillion-pound vessel resurfaced, highlighting both the technical challenges and the human toll of the tragedy.
