Illinois football, basketball coaches signed six-year extensions

Illinois has secured long-term commitments for its football and men's basketball programs by agreeing to six-year contract extensions with head coaches Bret Bielema and Brad Underwood. Bielema's new deal, running through 2030, includes a starting annual salary of $7.7 million and retention incentives beginning at $700,000, reflecting his success in turning around a struggling program and leading Illinois to a 10-win season in 2024, their best since 2001. Underwood, with a contract through the 2030-31 season and a starting salary of $4.4 million plus retention incentives starting at $1.15 million, has built a strong basketball program highlighted by five NCAA Tournament appearances and an Elite Eight run. Both contracts are pending approval by the university's board of trustees. Athletic director Josh Whitman praised the alignment and foundation of both programs, crediting the coaches, staff, and players for recent achievements. These extensions demonstrate Illinois' commitment to sustained success in both football and basketball amid competitive landscapes.
