Greek Ministry Completes AI Restoration of Philip II Tomb Fresco

The Greek Ministry of Culture has successfully completed the digital restoration of the hunting fresco located in the tomb of Philip II at Vergina, a significant work of classical antiquity. The fresco, measuring over 5.5 meters and depicting six hunting scenes, underwent advanced imaging techniques and artificial intelligence integration as part of the ReVis project, which aims to reveal hidden design details and color usage from ancient Greece. This comprehensive study, initiated in 2013, is set to be presented at a summit in April 2025, highlighting the fresco's historical and artistic significance. The digitally restored mural, which may represent Philip II and Alexander the Great, showcases the sophisticated techniques of 4th-century BCE Greek painting. The project is seen as a blend of art and science, with a focus on enhancing understanding of ancient artistic practices. Previous attempts to restore the fresco faced challenges due to its deteriorated condition, making this digital restoration a groundbreaking achievement.
