Somalia, Ethiopia Hold Talks on Coastline Dispute

A second round of Turkish-mediated talks between Somalia and Ethiopia aimed at resolving maritime disputes ended without a formal agreement, despite claims of 'notable progress' by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. The discussions were centered on a contentious memorandum that allows Ethiopia to lease 20 kilometers of coastline from Somaliland, which Somalia considers a violation of its sovereignty. Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi reaffirmed the nation's commitment to safeguarding its territorial integrity and has insisted that negotiations cannot proceed until Ethiopia publicly renounces the naval base agreement with Somaliland. Although both sides did not meet directly, Fidan reported increased convergence on major principles during the talks. The lack of a final agreement has raised tensions, particularly following Somalia's expulsion of the Ethiopian ambassador earlier this year. A third round of negotiations is planned for September 17, with hopes for a sustainable resolution.
