Weekend Highway Closures, Crashes Disrupt Travel

A series of crashes, repairs and construction projects are causing major traffic disruptions across multiple U.S. regions and the U.K. this weekend and into next week. Major weekend infrastructure closures include northbound I‑5 in San Diego from I‑8 to Mission Bay Drive (Fri night–Mon morning) for culvert replacement and westbound I‑44 at I‑270 in St. Louis (Fri night–Mon morning) for bridge repairs after a girder was struck by an oversized load, with ramp impacts and detours expected. Overnight work will close northbound I‑476 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Quakertown and Lehigh Valley (midnight–6 a.m. Sept. 28) for Tilghman Street bridge work with posted detours and police assistance. In the U.K., Cadent gas works on Noak Hill Road (Sept. 25–Oct. 3) will use temporary two‑way signals and may cause delays on the key diversion around Gallows Corner. Local incidents include a multi‑vehicle crash in Pinellas County that closed the Gateway Expressway West off‑ramp to Bryan Dairy Road and sent one person to the hospital as a trauma alert, a crash that closed northbound I‑25 at Paseo Del Norte in Albuquerque, and a roughly two‑week closure of northbound lanes on the South Expressway in Council Bluffs for concrete and railroad crossing repairs. Other earlier incidents have since reopened — Highway 74 at East Main in Marshville reopened after a crash that downed a utility pole, Ontario’s Highway 35/115 reopened after a dump truck rollover that injured three and spilled gravel, and lanes briefly closed on I‑24 East at Exit 66 in Tennessee were reopened — and drivers are advised to allow extra travel time and exercise caution.
