Michigan State Police Test First Electric Patrol Car

The Michigan State Police (MSP) have introduced their first battery electric vehicle, a 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E, into their patrol fleet as part of a broader initiative to transition state-owned vehicles to zero-emission by 2040. This vehicle, primarily for patrolling state-owned and leased properties in Lansing, serves as a test to assess the feasibility of electric vehicles in a police setting. The MSP's Precision Driving Unit has been testing alternative fuel vehicles since 2022, and the Mach-E, with an estimated range of 270 miles, was chosen for its handling and performance. The initiative aims to explore long-term cost savings and broader fleet integration, with officials optimistic about fuel savings and reduced environmental impact.
