Kansas City Man Sentenced for 2023 Shooting

Matthew Whitmill, a St. Joseph man, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a 2023 shooting outside a Kansas City gas station. Whitmill pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and armed criminal action after admitting to shooting his coworker, citing fear due to previous heated arguments. The incident was witnessed by an on-duty police officer who pursued Whitmill until he was apprehended following a police chase. Separately, Zarrell Semaj Finley received a 'Hard 50' sentence for the 2022 murder of Shaquille J. Jackson at an Overland Park gas station. Finley was found guilty of first-degree murder and firearm possession by a felon, with evidence including surveillance video showing the altercation and subsequent shooting. Finley's sentence mandates 50 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
