Grandmother and Tortoise Share Unique Bond

Jackie Leek, a 58-year-old grandmother from Warrington, Cheshire, has formed a unique bond with her African sulcata tortoise, Mr. Miyagi, whom she bought for companionship while recovering from cancer. Diagnosed with myeloma and breast cancer four years ago, Jackie first owned a tortoise named Thor, who died after three years. The tortoise, expected to grow from his current weight of 19kg to around 63kg, often accompanies Jackie on walks, to the beach, and even to local pubs, attracting significant public attention. Jackie has set up a trust fund to ensure Mr. Miyagi's care after her passing, as he could live up to 120 years. The pair’s outings often cause people to stop their cars and take photos, turning Mr. Miyagi into a local celebrity. Jackie credits the tortoise with helping her through dark days, providing her with purpose and companionship.
