Egypt Inaugurates Grand Egyptian Museum Showcasing Ancient Civilization Treasures
Egypt inaugurated the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the world's largest museum dedicated to a single civilization, near the Giza pyramid complex. The museum, which took more than 20 years and $1.2 billion to complete, showcases over 100,000 artifacts spanning 5,000 years of Egyptian history, including treasures from Tutankhamun's tomb and a massive statue of Ramses II at the entrance. The opening ceremony in Cairo was attended by numerous world leaders, including Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who emphasized the museum as a symbol of Egypt's rich cultural heritage and its role in fostering global understanding and peace. GEM's design aligns architecturally with the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Menkaure, featuring a pyramid-shaped entrance adorned with hieroglyphs and alabaster. The museum represents a significant cultural achievement despite delays caused by the Arab Spring, financial crises, the COVID-19 pandemic, and regional conflicts. It is seen as a bridge connecting Egypt's ancient past with its present and future, drawing praise for its preservation and celebration of Egyptian creativity and contributions to civilization.
