SOCAR, Syrian Government Sign Strategic Energy MoU in Azerbaijan

During the working visit of Syrian Transitional President Ahmad Al-Sharaa to Azerbaijan, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Azerbaijan's State Oil Company (SOCAR) and Syria's government, represented by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy Mikayil Jabbarov and Syria’s Minister of Energy Mohammad al-Bashir. This agreement signifies growing energy cooperation between the two countries. Separately, Turkey is pursuing a strategic energy partnership with SOCAR to supply Syria with 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas and 1,000 megawatts of electricity annually, aiming to aid in Syria's post-civil war reconstruction. Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar highlighted this initiative as part of Turkey's shift from supporting rebels during Syria's civil war to becoming a key ally of the new Syrian government. The collaboration underscores Turkey's intent to play a leading role in Syria's recovery and the regional energy sector, with SOCAR potentially joining the project to help normalize life in Syria. Together, these developments reflect a broader regional effort to stabilize and rebuild Syria through enhanced energy cooperation.
