The Indian Embassy in Laos successfully rescued 47 Indian nationals trapped in cyber scam centres in the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Bokeo province. The victims were lured under false job pretenses and subjected to exploitative conditions, including deprivation of food and rest if they failed to meet daily targets. Of the 47 rescued, 29 were handed over by Lao authorities following a crackdown, while 18 approached the embassy directly. The mission has so far rescued 635 Indians from similar situations and facilitated their safe return to India. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has discussed the issue with Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat trafficking and exploitation of Indian nationals. The embassy continues to warn citizens against fake job offers in the region, urging thorough diligence to prevent future scams.
