Red Sox Place Marcelo Mayer On Bereavement List, Recall Nick Sogard

The Boston Red Sox placed rookie infielder Marcelo Mayer on the bereavement list ahead of their three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, temporarily removing him from the lineup to tend to personal matters. In response, the team recalled infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester, who is set to start at third base and bat ninth. Mayer, who has played multiple infield positions this season, including third base in place of the injured Alex Bregman and after the trade of Rafael Devers, is expected to be away for three to seven days per MLB bereavement rules. The Red Sox are currently 40-42 and in fourth place in the AL East, trailing the Blue Jays by four games. Manager Alex Cora indicated Mayer is expected to return by Monday, while Sogard, who has a .245 batting average in 14 games this season, will fill in during Mayer's absence. The Red Sox will host the Blue Jays at Fenway Park, with Toronto starter José Berríos scheduled to pitch the opener.
