Northvolt Moves Lithium-Metal Development to Sweden

Northvolt, a Swedish battery manufacturer, is relocating its lithium-metal battery technology development from California to its R&D hub in Västerås, Sweden. This strategic move aims to consolidate the company's research and industrialization efforts for its battery product portfolio, including lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and lithium-metal technologies, into one location. The decision follows production delays and a canceled €2 billion order, prompting a reevaluation of Northvolt's expansion plans. Northvolt Labs will now serve as the central facility, benefiting from a robust team of engineers and manufacturing experts, which is expected to enhance cross-innovation and accelerate product development. Employees from the acquired Cuberg operation in California have been encouraged to transition to available roles within Northvolt. CEO Shauna McIntyre will continue in a leadership position within Northvolt North America to support the company's regional expansion.
