OpenAI Acquires Startup, Agrees 6GW AMD Deal
OpenAI acquired investment start‑up Roi, which will wind down operations on 15 October 2025 as part of the transition, and Roi co‑founder and CEO Sujith Vishwajith will join OpenAI; Roi built a portfolio‑tracking app and a chatbot that offered personalized investment advice. Separately, OpenAI struck a multi‑year, multi‑generation partnership with AMD to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs for next‑generation AI infrastructure, starting with a 1GW rollout of MI450 GPUs in the second half of 2026 and including joint hardware, software and rack‑scale solutions. The agreement includes warrants letting OpenAI buy up to 160 million AMD shares (roughly 9–10% of the company) that vest on deployment, share‑price and other technical/commercial milestones, and AMD executives said the pact could generate “tens of billions” in revenue, sending AMD shares sharply higher. That AMD deal is one of several massive compute arrangements OpenAI has pursued — alongside Nvidia, Oracle and CoreWeave — that together give OpenAI options on more than 20GW of capacity and, by some estimates, imply nearly $1 trillion of deployment commitments. Analysts and investors warned the scale, performance‑based financing and execution risks pose substantial commercial exposure and raised questions about how OpenAI will fund and manage the resulting compute commitments.
