Mahmoud Afana, a Hamas terrorist who openly boasted to his parents about killing ten Israelis during the October 7, 2023, massacre, was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in Deir al-Balah. The chilling recording of Afana's phone call, made from a Jewish victim's phone inside Kibbutz Mefalsim, revealed him bragging about the murders while his parents praised his actions. The call, released two and a half weeks after the massacre during a United Nations Security Council session by then-Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, captured Afana detailing the killings and showing his intent to live broadcast from the scene. Afana expressed no remorse, stating there was no return for him except death or victory, and his family repeatedly encouraged and celebrated his actions.
