Thousands Attend Funeral of Archbishop Anastasios in Tirana

Archbishop Anastasios, who revitalized the Orthodox Church in Albania after the fall of communism, passed away on January 25, 2025, at the age of 95. His funeral service in Tirana was attended by thousands, including religious leaders and dignitaries, reflecting his significant impact on Albanian society and the Orthodox community. Pope Francis expressed his condolences, recalling their meeting in 2014 and praising Anastasios for his pastoral care and efforts to rebuild the church following decades of state-imposed atheism. Anastasios, born in Greece, led the church in Albania since 1991, establishing numerous churches and educational institutions throughout the country.
