High Point, Grand Rapids Lead Thriving US Furniture Manufacturing
Despite globalization shifting much of furniture manufacturing overseas, certain U.S. cities continue to thrive in this industry due to their historical roots and craftsmanship. High Point, North Carolina, known as the “Furniture Capital of the World,” remains a pivotal center for American furniture design and manufacturing, hosting the biannual High Point Market, the largest home furnishings trade show globally. At its mid-20th century peak, 60% of all U.S.-made furniture was produced within 125 miles of High Point, which continues to lead in residential furniture production alongside nearby towns. Grand Rapids, Michigan, nicknamed “Furniture City,” serves as the headquarters for major commercial and office furniture brands like Steelcase and Herman Miller, maintaining its status as a leading hub for high-end office furnishings. The city's furniture industry traces back to the 1800s with Scandinavian immigrant roots, sustaining a strong industrial presence today. Although other cities like Chicago are better known for different industries, they still contribute to the furniture manufacturing landscape in the U.S.
