BBC Journalists Appeal Equal Pay Tribunal Ruling

Four senior female BBC journalists, including Martine Croxall and Annita McVeigh, have filed an appeal after an employment tribunal denied them the right to pursue equal pay claims against the corporation. The tribunal concluded that the women, who had previously settled similar claims in 2020, could not bring forth new claims based on the same issues. The journalists argue that the prior settlements only addressed historical disparities and should not impede their challenges to discriminatory pay practices since then. They also allege they were sidelined for a year after being overlooked for chief presenter roles following a merger. Their full tribunal hearing is scheduled for March 2025, and they are receiving support from the National Union of Journalists. Their legal representatives assert that the appeal raises significant questions about the applicability of out-of-court settlements regarding future unlawful actions.
