Davide Ghiotto Breaks 10,000m World Record in Calgary

Italian speed skater Davide Ghiotto set a new world record in the 10,000 meters at the Speed Skating World Cup in Calgary, clocking in at 12 minutes 25.69 seconds. This remarkable performance surpassed the previous record of 12:30.74, held by Sweden's Nils van der Poel since the 2022 Olympics. Ghiotto, a bronze medalist from the Beijing Games and reigning world champion, showcased his prowess just ahead of the upcoming Milan-Cortina Olympic Games in 2026. His achievement marks him as the first athlete to average sub-30-second laps over the 25-lap event. Ghiotto hails from the Veneto region of Italy and has been a prominent figure in speed skating, having transitioned from roller skating at age 19. The Calgary event also saw American Casey Dawson break the U.S. record, finishing at 12:45.43.
