Met Office Warns 80mph Gales Across 500-Mile UK Coastline
The Met Office has issued a widespread yellow weather warning for strong and gusty winds across much of the UK, including Flintshire, North Wales, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, and extensive coastal areas from London to North West England. The warning is effective from 8pm on Sunday, September 14, until 6pm on Monday, September 15, with gusts expected to reach 50 to 60 mph around coasts and hills, and up to 80 mph in the most exposed locations. This prolonged windy spell, associated with an area of low pressure, is likely to cause travel disruption, damage to buildings such as tiles being blown from roofs, power cuts, and potential impacts on mobile phone coverage. Coastal communities are at risk from spray and large waves, and people living near cliffs are advised to exercise caution and keep dogs on leads. The Met Office advises securing loose outdoor items like bins, garden furniture, and trampolines, and warns of a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris. Residents are urged to stay updated on weather conditions, prepare for possible power outages, and take care if venturing near the coast during this period.
