Grijalba, who had been under investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for allegedly shipping cocaine from Limón, Costa Rica, was captured thanks to posts that showcased their travels, including a notable photo in front of the Eiffel Tower. The DEA coordinated with the UK's National Crime Agency to apprehend him at the airport in December, where he had traveled with his family, purchasing $20,000 worth of tickets. Costa Rican authorities, while acknowledging his links to drug trafficking, had not charged him with any crimes, leading President Rodrigo Chaves Robles to criticize local law enforcement for their inaction. Grijalba is currently contesting extradition to the U.S., where he faces significant legal consequences.
