MyShake App Now Available on Laptops
The California Governor's Office of Emergency Services and UC Berkeley Seismology Lab have announced the MyShake earthquake early warning app is now available for free on Chromebooks and MacOS. This app has successfully alerted over 500,000 users ahead of two significant earthquakes in December, including a 7.0 magnitude quake in Humboldt County that provided up to 15 seconds of advance notice. Governor Gavin Newsom stressed the importance of this technology, which gives Californians crucial time to take protective actions during seismic events. Since its launch, MyShake has recorded over 3.7 million downloads and is based on the California Earthquake Early Warning System. The app not only issues alerts but also collects seismic data using users' phone sensors to enhance its accuracy. Officials encourage residents to enable emergency notifications to stay informed during earthquakes.
