Scottish Brothers Set New Fastest Pacific Ocean Row Record
Scottish brothers Jamie, Ewan, and Lachlan Maclean have set a new world record by completing the fastest unsupported, nonstop row across the Pacific Ocean, covering approximately 9,000 miles from Peru to Cairns, Australia in 140 days. Despite facing violent tropical storms that forced detours and even swept Lachlan overboard during a 36-hour storm, the trio successfully surpassed the previous record of 162 days set by Russian solo rower Fyodor Konyukhov in 2014. Their boat, Rose Emily, named in memory of their unborn sister, carried them through the grueling journey, which was livestreamed and supported by celebrities including Ewan McGregor and Mark Wahlberg. Raising more than £790,000 so far, the Macleans aim to reach £1 million to fund clean water projects in Madagascar, benefiting around 40,000 people. Emotional scenes greeted their arrival, with bagpipes playing and family and friends present to celebrate their achievement, while the brothers expressed gratitude for simple comforts like pizza, showers, and beds after their relentless ordeal. Their experience has highlighted the immense physical and mental challenges of ocean rowing and inspired widespread support for their charity efforts.
