New Haven Joins NEC, Replaces Saint Francis
The University of New Haven has accepted membership in the Northeast Conference (NEC), officially joining on July 1 and transitioning its athletic programs from NCAA Division II to Division I beginning in the 2025-26 academic year. New Haven will become the NEC's 10th full-time member, replacing Saint Francis University, which plans to move to Division III. The Chargers sponsor 20 varsity sports, 19 of which align with NEC offerings, though football’s integration is still being evaluated. The NCAA-mandated reclassification period is expected to conclude by 2028-29, at which point New Haven will attain full Division I membership. During the transition, the Chargers will be eligible for some NEC championships but not NCAA championships until full Division I status is achieved. University and NEC leaders describe the move as a strategic step to boost academic and athletic standing and increase institutional visibility.
