Citizen Scientists Identify Global Plastic Pollution Hotspots Across 39 Countries

Recent research highlights the global crisis of plastic pollution, revealing significant regional differences in microplastic types and concentrations along coastlines, with nurdles being the most common pollutant, especially in the Netherlands due to a shipping disaster. In response, the Biden administration has released the first comprehensive government-wide report on plastic pollution and announced plans to phase out single-use plastics in federal operations by 2035, though some environmental advocates warn that these measures fall short given the expected tripling of plastic production by 2060.
