Derek Cordell Garner Convicted of Multiple Felonies in Flint Assaults

Derek Cordell Garner, Sr., a 57-year-old man from Flint, was found guilty by a jury of multiple felonies, including assault with intent to do great bodily harm and first-degree criminal sexual conduct, stemming from a violent incident in May 2020. Testimony revealed that after an argument, Garner brutally assaulted and raped a woman who had been living with him. The victim managed to escape through a window while Garner chased her, ultimately seeking help from neighbors who called 911. Police found her severely injured, with swelling and bruising on her face and body. Garner faces a potential life sentence, with sentencing scheduled for February 28. Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton praised the victim's bravery in cooperating with law enforcement, which led to the conviction.
