Ben Askren Recovers After Double Lung Transplant

Former UFC fighter and Olympic wrestler Ben Askren underwent a double lung transplant after developing severe pneumonia from a bacterial infection, with his heart stopping four times and no memory of the ordeal between late May and early July 2025. Askren spent weeks on a ventilator and ECMO during his 45-day hospitalization, resulting in a 50-pound weight loss. The MMA and wrestling communities, along with his family and wife Amy, provided strong support, and fundraising efforts—including a major anonymous donation—helped pay for his medical expenses. Askren has expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love and support. He is currently focused on regaining strength, relearning basic functions, and is motivated to give back to his community. His recovery is ongoing following the life-saving surgery.
