Governor Stein extends emergency for wildfires in 34 NC counties

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has extended the state of emergency for 34 western counties by 30 days in response to ongoing wildfire threats and persistent dry conditions. The extension ensures continued support and resources for first responders, state forest firefighters, and local emergency management teams as they work to protect residents and property. Since March, the State Emergency Response Team has collaborated with the North Carolina Forest Service and other agencies to deploy personnel, equipment, and logistical supplies to affected communities. Over 2,300 wildfire incidents have burned more than 23,000 acres in March and April, according to state officials. The emergency order covers a wide area, including the tribal lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and authorities urge residents to exercise caution with any burning activities.
