California Bans Plastic Shopping Bags by 2026

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill banning all plastic shopping bags at grocery store checkouts, effective January 1, 2026. This new law builds on a previous one that allowed thicker plastic bags, which were supposed to be reusable and recyclable but were rarely reused or recycled. State Senator Catherine Blakespear cited a significant increase in discarded plastic bags, from 8 pounds per person in 2004 to 11 pounds per person in 2021. Environmental advocates praised the legislation, highlighting its importance in reducing plastic pollution and protecting marine life. While paper bags will be available for those who don't bring their own, critics argue the law may not fully address the problem and could lead to increased use of non-recyclable alternatives.
