Iran, Afghanistan seek expanded economic ties in Kabul talks
During a high-level visit to Kabul, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized the importance of strengthening economic and diplomatic ties between Iran and Afghanistan, characterizing the two nations as brothers. Meeting with Afghan officials including Amir Khan Muttaqi and Prime Minister Hassan Akhund, Araghchi discussed key issues such as migration, water rights, and security, stating that the stability of Iran is closely linked to that of Afghanistan. He expressed hope that the visit would lead to a new phase of bilateral relations that would benefit both countries. The discussions also addressed the ongoing water dispute stemming from the Helmand River Treaty of 1973, which has yet to be fully implemented. Despite international diplomatic challenges following the Taliban takeover, Iran has maintained active relations with Afghanistan. Both sides are optimistic about future cooperation to enhance cultural and economic relations.
