Poland Ensures Netanyahu's Safety for Auschwitz Commemoration

Poland's government has assured that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested if he attends the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27, despite an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against him for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that any Israeli representative wishing to attend will be guaranteed security, in light of the 'exceptional circumstances' surrounding the event. The ICC, which has over 120 member states, mandates that countries like Poland detain suspects, yet it lacks enforcement capabilities, and Israel does not recognize its jurisdiction. There remains uncertainty about Netanyahu's attendance, as he has not been to Europe since the warrant was issued in November, and it is unclear if he has received an official invitation. Other leaders, including Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, have expressed intentions to defy the warrant by inviting Netanyahu. The commemoration is also expected to host various world leaders, including Britain's King Charles.
