The FBI, in collaboration with international partners, has successfully disrupted a botnet of 260,000 devices believed to be operated by a Chinese government contractor, Integrity Technology Group, also known as Flax Typhoon. This operation involved taking control of infected devices, including cameras and routers, which had been used for espionage against critical infrastructure in the U.S. and abroad. FBI Director Christopher Wray reported that the hackers attempted to counter the operation with a DDoS attack but ultimately abandoned their infrastructure upon realizing the scale of the U.S. response. The botnet was significant for its role in concealing cyber operations targeting sensitive organizations, causing substantial harm and financial losses to victims. This action highlights ongoing U.S. efforts to counter threats from Chinese state-sponsored hacking activities. The Justice Department has vowed to continue disrupting such cyber threats to national security.
