Proton Sues Apple Over iOS App Store Monopoly in US
Swiss privacy-focused tech company Proton has filed a federal class-action antitrust lawsuit against Apple in California, accusing the tech giant of unlawfully monopolizing iPhone app distribution and payment processing. Proton alleges that Apple forces developers to use its App Store exclusively, mandates the use of its payment system with commissions up to 30%, and bans alternative app stores and payment processors on iOS, which the company says harms developers and consumers by limiting competition and innovation. The lawsuit seeks court orders to allow competing app stores and payment processors on iOS, as well as monetary damages for affected developers, which Proton intends to donate to democracy and human rights organizations. Proton claims Apple's fees are excessive and not justified by App Store maintenance costs, citing restrictions such as barring developers from informing customers about alternative payment options outside the App Store. This suit follows prior legal battles including the Epic Games case and aligns with other recent class actions, such as one filed by the Korean Publishers Association. Proton emphasizes that the goal is to end Apple's anti-competitive behavior permanently and secure meaningful changes to benefit developers, consumers, and competition.
