Brazil Seeks Full Membership in International Energy Agency
Brazil has formally requested to become a full member of the International Energy Agency (IEA), marking a significant step in global energy governance and reflecting the country's growing role in international energy markets. The request was submitted through a letter from Brazil's Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira and Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira, delivered by Ambassador Sarquis J.B. Sarquis to IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol at the IEA headquarters in Paris. Brazil highlighted its position as a net oil exporter with a diversified energy mix and leadership in renewable energy, emphasizing the strategic value it could bring to the IEA's work and international energy cooperation. The country, which has been an IEA partner since 2017, has collaborated extensively on energy security, data, and policy analysis, with the IEA conducting a comprehensive review of Brazil's energy policies this year. Brazil's bid comes amid its aggressive expansion of oil production while also pursuing renewable energy leadership, a dual approach that underscores its complex energy landscape. IEA Executive Director Birol welcomed the formal request, describing it as a major development that builds on years of deepening cooperation between Brazil and the agency.
