UK Households Earn Record £31 Million from Solar Energy

British households generated a record £31 million from rooftop solar panels in the last year, driven by a surge in installations facilitated by the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme. The total electricity exported back to the grid reached 283.1 GWh, enough to power over 88,000 homes, reflecting a significant increase from the previous year's £7.2 million and 77.3 GWh. The number of households participating in the SEG scheme tripled, from 92,946 in 2022 to 283,666 in 2023, as energy prices rose and installation costs fell. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasized the potential of solar energy as part of a broader agenda to enhance renewable energy generation. Furthermore, local initiatives like Solar Together are helping residents save on installation costs while promoting renewable energy solutions. The increase in installations, however, has seen an initial decline in 2024, suggesting the need for continued support and incentives.
