Rare Waterspouts Seen Over Lake Erie and Lake Murray

Rare waterspouts were observed in two different locations on July 25. In South Carolina, a waterspout formed over Lake Murray during the afternoon, surprising both visitors and the National Weather Service, with no reported injuries or damage. Similarly, in Ohio, multiple waterspouts were spotted over Lake Erie near Cedar Point, with one filmed by Joe Burkhardt in the morning. These waterspouts are attributed to colder air moving over warmer lake waters, creating the necessary conditions for their formation. Experts caution that while visually striking, waterspouts can be dangerous to watercraft and should be avoided.
